Internet Explorer is the single worst major web browser known to man !

Short Version :

Internet Explorer is a massive pile of uselessness. It's made by one of the worlds largest software companies but doesn't follow a lot of the web page rendering rules. In laymens terms sometimes 1+1=13 to Internet Explorer. Often us people who make web sites have to spend hours writing special code so Internet Explorer will show the site like every other browser does.

Beyond that Internet Explorer also has a lot of nice security flaws (thanks Microsoft) !

Microsoft could easily be making the best web browser in the world but instead they chose to make the worst.

Nag IE :

If you're a web master type like me there is a very easy way to nag Internet Explorer users into changing their web browsers - or whatever. It goes a little something like this ....

Add this code right after <body> to re-create the IE nag on this page.

<!--[if IE]>
<div style="width:100%; border-bottom: 2px solid red; background:gray; padding:5px;">
<strong>Warning</strong>: You are using Internet Explorer.
Please upgrade to <strong><a style="color:white;" href="http://getfirefox.com/">Firefox</a></strong>.
</div>
<br />
<![endif]-->

Load this page in IE to see the code in action.

This code utilizes the Internet Explorer conditional comments feature. Any browser other than IE will simply skip over the code thinking that it's a comment.

Bonus points :

If that's not direct enough for you check out this variation for IE 6 :

<!--[if IE 6]>
<div style="width:100%; border-bottom: 2px solid red; background:gray; padding:5px;">
<strong>Warning</strong>: This page can not be viewed with Internet Explorer 6.
Please upgrade to <strong><a style="color:white;" href="http://getfirefox.com/">Firefox</a></strong>.
</div>
<div style="display:none;">
<![endif]-->

By leaving that last DIV open as display:none; the rest of the page isn't shown to IE 6 users. Aint that great ?

Funny Note :

The W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) web design code checker thingy (link) was most likely unusable to a number of Windows XP SP 2 Internet Explorer users starting in Sept 2004 until the bug finally got patched Feb 2005 (link).
